Giants RB Cam Skattebo: ‘Definitely’ Considered Retiring After Ankle Injury

It was nearly a wrap for New York Giants running back Cam Skattebo after eight games. “Yeah, definitely. Probably a month in,” Skattebo said in an appearance on “Up & Adams” on Thursday morning when asked if he considered retiring from the NFL after suffering a dislocated ankle, an open tibia fracture and a ruptured deltoid ligament in the eighth game of his 2025 rookie campaign. “The first month was kind of like, ‘Damn, do I really want to do this?’ And then, I was like, it was seven [full] games. I got to go back and play. … “I think [the injury] gave me an extra step of finding that deep place and coming out of a hole that I didn’t know I could come out of. I’m appreciative of it, and I’m excited to see what I can build on it.” Skattebo added that he gave himself “one rule” coming out of college, which was if he “ever got a major injury,” he was “done playing.” The second-year player is back in action for the Giants this year, as he appeared in their first preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings on Aug. 15. Prior to his season-ending injury in Week 8 of last season, Skattebo rushed for 410 yards and five touchdowns on 4.1 yards per carry. He also totaled 24 receptions for 207 yards and two touchdowns. Skattebo’s best performance came in the Giants’ Week 6 Thursday night victory over the NFC East-rival Philadelphia Eagles, rushing for 98 yards and three touchdowns on 5.2 yards per carry in a 34-17 win. New York selected Skattebo in the fourth round of the 2025 NFL Draft out of Arizona State, with whom he finished fifth in 2024 Heisman Trophy voting. Skattebo is projected to be the Giants’ starting running back this season, with the recently signed Najee Harris, third-year Tyrone Tracy Jr. and veteran Devin Singletary also in the mix.​New York Giants second-year running back Cam Skattebo revealed that he “definitely” considered retiring after dislocating his ankle.
